They are grown for their opposite, lance-shaped to rounded, velvety, grey-green leaves and their slender, tubular, 2-lipped, brightly coloured flowers, borne in terminal and axillary clusters with prominent, colourful bracts. Grow in a border; in frost-prone areas, grow as a houseplant or in a warm greenhouse.
