The opposite leaves are ovate or obovate to elliptic, toothed, crinkled, hairy, and slightly glossy, mid-to dark green. Terminal panicles of showy, pendent, cup-shaped, waxy, fertile flowers with 5 fleshy petals and numerous stamens, and a few sterile outer flowers without petals, are borne in mid- and late summer. Suitable for a woodland or peat garden.
