Distribution en: Lord Howe Islands, New Zealand
Description en: Genus of about 40 species of deciduous shrubs, occasionally small trees, from New Zealand and Lord Howe Island. They are found in diverse habitats from coastal to mountain areas, including sand dunes, swamps, grassland, rocky places, woodland margins, streambanks, and lakesides. The seedlings have pinnate leaves, but mature plants are leafless or lose their leaves quickly. They are grown for their small, but usually profuse, often fragrant, pea-like flowers, borne in summer, sometimes singly, but mostly in dense, short racemes of 5-15, on cylindrical or flattened green shoots. They are attractive and unusual shrubs for a border or, in cooler areas, against a warm wall. Dwarf species, such as C. enysii, are suitable for a rock garden. In frost-prone areas, grow tender species in a cool greenhouse.
Hardiness en: Frost hardy to frost tender.
Cultivation en:
Propagation en: Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn; or sow seed, scarified or pre-soaked in hot water, in spring. Root semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Pests en: Trouble free.
