description_en: Genus of about 9 species of shade-loving, rhizomatous perennials, cultivated for their foliage and flowers, from scrub and forest in North America and from the Himalayas to China and Taiwan. Each plant has 1 or 2 peltate, palmately lobed, radical leaves, some-times with purplish brown patches between the conspicuous veins; the leaves are pushed up by the lengthening leaf-stalks and emerge looking like tiny, folded umbrellas. Terminal, cup-shaped, pink, white, or red flowers are solitary or produced in small umbels, and are followed by red or yellow fruits, 2.5-5cm (1-2in) long. Podophyllums are suitable for a woodland garden or moist, shady border. All parts of the plants are highly toxic if ingested.
hardiness_en: Fully hardy to frost hardy.
