It has alternate leaves and corymb-like panicles of dog-rose-like flowers, followed by bristly fruits. In frost-prone areas, grow B. orellana in a warm greenhouse or conservatory for its attractive fruit; in warmer climates, grow as a hedge or specimen tree, and for the seeds, which yield dye.
