Terminal or axillary spikes of small, unisexual, petalless flowers (the females greenish white, the males with white stamens) are produced in spring or early summer. Cultivated for their foliage, they are useful as ground cover in a shrub border or woodland garden. They spread freely, especially in moist, humus-rich soil.
