description_en: Genus of 12 species of evergreen or deciduous, rhizomatous, tufted perennials, found in a variety of open habitats, mainly in New Zealand and S. Australia. Loose panicles or racemes of small flowers, with 6 spreading tepals and hairy anthers and filaments, are borne in summer. The hardier species, such as A. candidum and A. milleflorum are excellent for a sunny rock garden. Grow half-hardy species, such as A. cirratum, in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in frost-prone areas.
