They are cultivated for their attractive, alternate or near-opposite, usually ovate leaves, their spreading cymes of tiny flowers, and their autumn fruits. Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants, so both sexes must be grown together to obtain fruit. They tolerate sea winds and are useful for a coastal garden or shrub border.
