description_en: Genus of 50 species of rhizomatous, evergreen, clump-forming, mainly spring- or summer-flowering perennials from coastal and mountain sites in W. and E. Africa, Madagascar, and South Africa. They have slender stems bearing spike-like, terminal panicles with lateral clusters of saucer-shaped flowers, each lasting only one day. The basal leaves, 10-70cm (4-28in) long, are erect and 2-ranked, and longer than the stem-clasping leaves. In frost-prone areas, grow in a cool greenhouse; in frost-free areas, grow in a border.
