Their leaves are entire and alternate. A. triloba, the 6nly species cultivated, has striking foliage, curious, solitary flowers, borne on the previous year’s shoots, and edible fruit, Suitable for a shrub border or a sunny woodland clearing, it needs long, hot summers to achieve tree stature, and to flower and fruit freely. In cooler climates, it is grown as a multi-stemmed foliage shrub.
