They are grown mainly for their colourful, opposite, toothed or scalloped leaves, which are useful for ground cover. From spring to summer, small, tubular, 5-lobed, usually white flowers are borne in terminal spikes. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate greenhouse or conservatory; some species are suitable for use in hanging baskets. In warmer climates, grow in a border or as edging.
