description_en: Genus of 3 or more species of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials from woodland in the Himalayas, China, and Japan. The long-lasting, leathery, glossy, basal leaves are elliptic to lance-shaped, pointed at the tips, and narrowed at the bases into long, slightly winged leaf-stalks. Solitary, 6- to 8-lobed, purple or grey-white flowers with purple markings, borne on the rhizomes at soil level, are pollinated by snails or slugs and mostly hidden by the foliage. Aspidistras are valued for their tolerance of deep shade, fluctuating temperatures, and neglect. Although commonly grown as houseplants, they are also useful as ground cover in mild climates.
