They have furrowed bark and alternate, pinnate leaves, usually with toothed leaflets. Greenish yellow male and female flowers are borne separately on the same plant in late spring and early summer; males in pendulous catkins and females inconspicuous. Fruits are ovoid or spherical, initially green, ripening to brown, and contain edible nuts with hard, thin or thick, furrowed shells. Cultivated for their habit, foliage, and fruit, walnuts are fine specimen trees.
