description_en: Genus of about 25 species of robust, erect, soft-stemmed, evergreen perennials from woodland in tropical North, Central, and South America. The linear to elliptic leaves are spirally arranged or 2-ranked, and the angular, cup-shaped flowers, with 3 sepals and 3 intense blue or sometimes white petals of unequal size, are borne in terminal or axillary racemes, followed by fleshy, orange-red fruit. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse; in warmer climates, use in a border.
