description_en: Genus of over 90 species of mostly clump-forming, rhizomatous perennials with an open, lax habit found on forest floors in tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, and North, Central, and South America. The spirally arranged, somewhat fleshy leaves are inversely lance-shaped, lance-shaped, or elliptic. Costus species are cultivated for their showy, solitary or paired, white, yellow, orange, pink, or red flowers with basal bracts, usually produced in dense, terminal heads on leafy shoots or sometimes on leafless shoots. The flowers are tubular, each with 3 petals, usually of equal size. Where temperatures fall below 18°C (64°F), grow in a warm greenhouse. In humid tropical climates, grow in a shady border.
