description_en: Genus of 10 species of stemless perennials, with solid tubers or upright, scarred rhizomes, from semi-evergreen, monsoon forest in West Africa and S.E. Asia, grown for their handsome foliage and unusual flowers. Lance-shaped to elliptic or obovate, entire or palmately or pinnately lobed leaves, often with purplish green leaf-stalks, are widely spaced or crowded on the rootstock. Nodding, bell-shaped flowers are borne in umbels, each umbel surrounded by 4 leaf-like floral bracts. Each flower also has a distinctive, narrow, thread-like appendage, to 25cm (10in) long. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse; in humid tropical climates, grow in a shady border.
