They are cultivated for their handsome, usually entire, leathery leaves, their many-stamened flowers, produced singly or sometimes in small clusters, and their usually pendent, spherical, fleshy, greenish yellow then bright red fruit. T. gymnanthera is the most commonly cultivated species. Grow as a specimen plant, in a shrub border, or against a shady wall, or use for hedging.
