They are grown for their tubular to funnel-shaped, 2-lipped, often hooded, 5-lobed, blue to purple, white, or rarely yellow flowers, borne in terminal or axillary, usually cone-shaped inflorescences, sometimes loose panicles or spikes. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lance-shaped or elliptic, entire or toothed, often in unequal pairs.
