Description en: Genus of about 200 species of usually dioecious, woody, deciduous or ever-green climbers, and herbaceous perennials, grown for their foliage and fruits. They are widespread in tropical and temperate regions, in woodland and thickets. The alternate, simple, some-times shallowly lobed leaves are lance-shaped to elliptic, or broadly ovate to rounded, some truncate or heart-shaped at the bases; they have curled tendrils, and are often borne on prickly stems. The small, star-shaped flowers are green, greenish white, yellow, or brown, and are followed by spherical, black or red berries. Train into a tree, on to a pillar, or against a warm, sunny wall. In frost-prone areas, grow tender species in a temperate or warm greenhouse.
