Erect, linear-lance-shaped leaves are mostly ribbed or sometimes pleated, mainly mid-green, sometimes pale green or brownish green, usually 60-100cm (24-36in) long. They are grown for their funnel-shaped, brightly coloured flowers, borne from mid- to late summer in often branched spikes on wiry stems. Grow at the edge of a shrub border or in clumps in a herbaceous border. The flowers are excellent for cutting.
