description_en: Genus, including species formerly classified under Gloxinia and Rechsteineria, of about 40 species of tuberous perennials and deciduous or evergreen, low-growing shrubs from tropical forest in Central and South America. They have usually ovate to elliptic, fleshy leaves, in opposite pairs or in whorls of 6 or more, often crowded at the stem bases. They are grown for their showy, solitary or clustered, tubular, trumpet-shaped, or bell-shaped flowers, generally borne in summer. In frost-prone areas or in areas with high winter rainfall, grow as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. In frost-free areas, they are suitable for a trough, raised bed, peat bed, terrace, or woodland garden.
