description_en: Genus of approximately 700 species of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials found in a range of habitats, from semi-desert to rainforest, mostly in tropical regions, with some species in temperate and alpine zones. Grown for their foliage, they vary from small, moss-like tufts to tall, scrambling plants. They have long, creeping, branched stems, often rooting along their length, which are clothed in scale-like leaves, to 3mm (1/8in) long. Spores form in small leafy terminal, spikes. Use as ground cover or in hanging baskets. In frost-prone areas, grow in a cool, temperate, or warm greenhouse, or as houseplants.
