Distribution en: Tropics & Subtropics
Description en: Genus of 50 species of annuals, biennials, and often succulent and woody-based perennials, found in dry grassland and scrub in tropical and sub-tropical regions of Africa and North and Central America. The smooth, often succulent, usually deciduous but some-times semi-evergreen leaves are arranged in attractive rosettes or in opposite pairs on short or elongated stems arising from a tuberous or fleshy rootstock. Showy, cup- to saucer-shaped flowers are borne singly or in cymes or panicles; although short-lived, they may be produced over a long period in summer. Grow in a rock garden. In cool areas, grow tender species in a temperate or warm greenhouse, or on a sunny windowsill.

Propagation en: Sow seed at 15-18°C (59-64°F) in spring or as soon as ripe. Divide mat- or rosette-forming species in spring.
