description_en: Genus of 1 (possibly 2) species of evergreen, monoecious, coniferous tree from forests of China and Japan. It is cultivated for its conical or columnar habit, its thick, fibrous, red-brown bark, and its narrowly wedge-shaped, light to dark green leaves, which point forwards in 5-ranked spirals around the shoots. Solitary, spherical female cones, 1-3cm (1/2-1 1/4in) long, have shield-like scales, each with a central point and triangular teeth. The ovoid male cones, 1cm (1/2in) long, are clustered at the shoot tips. Grow both species and cultivars as specimen trees; the dwarf cultivars are effective accent plants for a conifer collection, with heaths or heathers. Cryptomeria is one of the few conifer genera that will coppice successfully.
