distribution_en:

description_en: Genus of 10 species of evergreen shrubs from Australasia and the S.W. Pacific, often found on rainforest margins, and also on seasonally dry, rocky hillsides or beside rivers. They are cultivated mainly for their foliage: the leaves are simple, usually entire, spotted, mottled, or banded with various colours, and borne in opposite pairs. Tubular, 2-lipped flowers are produced in racemes or panicles at the ends of the shoots. Where temperatures fall below 13°C (55°F), grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse, or as houseplants. In warmer climates, use to brighten shady borders; they are effective with ferns.

hardiness_en: Frost tender.

cultivation_en:

propagation_en: Sow seed at 19-24°C (66-75°F) in spring, root semi-ripe cuttings with bottom heat in summer, or layer in summer.
