Description en: Genus of 8 species of rhizomatous, soft-stemmed perennials or shrubs from forest in Central and South America. The fleshy, creeping rhizomes give rise to erect stems bearing opposite pairs of ovate to elliptic leaves. Bell- or funnel-shaped, blue or pink flowers, finely hairy on the outside, are borne sin y or in pairs from the leaf axils from summer to mid-autumn. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse. Elsewhere, grow in a shady border or woodland setting.

Propagation en: Sow seed at 19-24°C (66-75°F) in early spring. Divide rhizomes in spring. Root basal cuttings with bottom heat in summer.
