description_en: Genus of about 15 species of bulbous perennials found in habitats ranging from rocky screes to seasonally damp meadows in South Africa and tropical southern Africa. They are cultivated for their unusual racemes of flowers borne in late summer and early autumn. Large bulbs each produce a basal rosette of lance-shaped to strap-shaped, glossy, light green leaves and a stout stem that bears a tight raceme of star-shaped flowers, to 2.5cm (1in) across, topped by a small tuft of leafy bracts, similar to those of a pineapple. Grow in a sunny, sheltered border or at the base of a warm wall. In frost-prone areas, grow less hardy species in a cool greenhouse.
hardiness_en: Fully hardy (borderline) to frost tender.
