description_en: Genus of about 40 species of usually dioecious, evergreen shrubs, occasionally climbers, occurring in dry, rocky sites from the Mediterranean to China, and in North and South America. They have green shoots and tiny, scale-like leaves, and are valued for their spherical fruits, which, on female plants, follow the tiny flowers. Grow as ground cover in a shrub border or rock garden. In frost-prone areas, grow tender species in a cold greenhouse or alpine house.
