description_en: Genus of about 30 species of evergreen trees and shrubs found in tropical S. USA and Central and South America, in scrub, thickets, and open woodland. Simple, mainly ovate, often toothed leaves are opposite or sometimes in whorls. They are grown for their salverform flowers, borne in terminal or axillary racemes or panicles, followed by attractive, spherical berries. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate greenhouse; in warmer climates, use in a border, or as a hedge or windbreak.
