description_en: Genus of about 17 species of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs found in woodland from the Himalayas to Japan, and from Mexico to Central America. They have alternate, leathery, usually linear to ovate-oblong, mid- to dark green leaves. Cleyera species and cultivars are grown for their attractive foliage and bowl-shaped, pale yellow to creamy white flowers, which may be borne singly or in clusters from the leaf axils of the previous year’s wood. Suitable for a warm, sheltered shrub border or for growing against a wall. In frost-prone areas, grow C. japonica ’Tricolor’ in a cool greenhouse.
