description_en: Genus of about 370 species of spiny, evergreen, usually climbing, occasionally shrub-like, dioecious palms found in tropical forest in Africa and Asia, New Guinea, and from N.E. Australia to Fiji. The leaves are pinnate, sometimes ending in barbed whips, and have lance-shaped leaflets. The inflorescences, borne among the leaf sheaths, have tubular, spiny, persistent bracts. Male flowers are solitary and symmetrical; female flowers are paired with sterile males, and are often larger and followed by spherical yellow fruits, l-3cm (1/2-1 l/4in) across. Many species are used in the construction of cane furniture. In frost-prone areas, grow young plants as houseplants, in a conservatory, or in a temperate greenhouse. In warmer areas, grow through shrubs or trees.
