Description en: Genus of 100-120 species of clump-forming, evergreen bamboos, occurring in forest and woodland in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. Smooth, usually hollow canes produce slender branches at each node, bearing linear-lance-shaped leaves. They are cultivated for their foliage and, in some species, such as B. ventricosa, for their curious, swollen internodes. In frost-prone climates, grow in a temperate greenhouse or conservatory. In frost-free climates, B. multiplex is useful as a hedge or windbreak.
