distribution_en:
description_en: Genus of about 170 species of evergreen shrubs and subshrubs from moist woodland in tropical North, Central, and South America. They are grown for their attractive flowerheads and opposite pairs of simple, fleshy, glossy leaves produced on stout or slender stems. Terminal, occasionally axillary, 4-sided spikes with long-lasting, overlapping, brightly coloured bracts and a succession of short-lived, tubular, red to yellow flowers are usually borne sporadically throughout the year. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse or as houseplants; elsewhere, use for bedding and for a border. Plants in containers grow to only about a third of the dimensions given below.
hardiness_en: Frost tender.

propagation_en: After flowering, cut back the main stems to a strong pair of leaves to encourage sideshoots. When these are 8-lOcm (3-4in) long, detach them and root at 21°C (70°F). Propagate regularly, as older specimens deteriorate rapidly.
pests_en: New growth is prone to infestation by aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs.
