description_en: Genus of about 12 species of annuals and perennials, similar to Alcea but bearing smaller, usually stalked flowers, found mainly in moist, sometimes brackish coastal habitats from W. Europe to C. Asia. They have strong, wiry stems that seldom need support, and broadly ovate, shallowly to deeply lobed, dark green leaves. Racemes or panicles of small, pink to bluish purple, 5-petalled flowers are produced from summer to autumn. They are suitable for a mixed or herbaceous border or wildflower garden.
