description_en: Genus of 30 species of bulbous perennials from grassland in the Middle East and Africa. Most of those cultivated come from South Africa, and have open tubular flowers and long, strap-shaped to lance-shaped or narrowly linear, deep green to grey-green, basal leaves. The narrowly bell-shaped or tubular flowers, 2-4cm (3/4in-1 1/2in) across, are borne in loose racemes, and are usually white or yellow with a green or dull red central stripe on each tepal. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate greenhouse; in warmer areas, use in an open, sunny site.
