Description en: Genus of about 430 species of evergreen shrubs and trees, and annuals, grown for their foliage and flowers. They are found in tropical and subtropical regions, from tropical woodland to open savannah. Their alternate leaves are oval to ovate, simple, and toothed. Tiny, petalless flowers are borne in terminal or axillary, catkin-like racemes, either small and insignificant, or large and brightly coloured. Where temperatures fall below 10-13°C (50-55°F), grow in a warm greenhouse or as a houseplant. In warmer areas, grow in a border, or use for hedging or as specimen plants.

Propagation en: Divide rhizomatous or clump-forming species in spring. Root softwood cuttings in early spring, or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer, with bottom heat.
