Distribution en: Mexico to Tropical America
Description en: Genus of about 60 species of rosette-forming, rhizomatous or suckering, evergreen, mainly epiphytic or rock-dwelling perennials (bromeliads) from scrub, woodland, and forest, up to an altitude of 1,700m (5,500ft), in S. Mexico, Central America, and N., E., and C. South America. They are cultivated for their erect or arching panicles or racemes of tubular, colourful but short-lived flowers. Many also have attractive leaves. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate greenhouse or as houseplants; in warm, humid areas, grow in a border.
