The attractive, simple, entire, broadly obovate to oblong or elliptic leaves are either transparent or minutely pitted with transparent spots, and arranged alternately, in spirals, or in nearly opposite pairs. Insignificant, petalless, tubular flowers are borne in axillary or terminal spikes or panicles, followed by one-seeded fruits. Where temperatures fall below 13°C (55°F), grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse. In tropical climates, grow as specimen or shade trees, hedges, or windbreaks.
