distribution_en: Mexico to Tropical America
description_en: Genus of approximately 20 species of mostly scandent or semi-pendent, epiphytic or rock-dwelling, perennial cacti from forest and woody areas of Texas (USA), Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and the West Indies. They produce short-hairy, generally spiny areoles, and most have aerial roots. Stems are slender, ribbed, or, more rarely, angled or flattened. The large, trumpet-shaped, mainly nocturnal flowers are usually borne in summer. In areas where temperatures fall below 15°C (59°F), grow in a warm green-house, in hanging baskets or in containers with support for climbing stems. In warmer climates, grow in containers in a courtyard garden, or at the base of a warm, sunny wall.
hardiness_en: Frost tender.
