description_en: Genus of approximately 30 species of annuals, perennials, and subshrubs, widely distributed throughout the N. hemisphere, occurring in dry, sunny sites and often found on cliffs. They are cultivated for their aromatic leaves, which are opposite, linear to lance-shaped, or oblong-obovate to spoon-shaped, and for their cyme-like or spike-like inflorescences; these consist of whorls of stalkless, tubular, 2-lipped flowers, borne in summer, which are attractive to bees and other insects. Suitable for growing in a mixed border or rock garden. S. hortensis and S. montana are used as culinary herbs.
