description_en: Genus of about 50 species of mostly epiphytic or rock-dwelling perennial cacti from wooded and forested areas of Central and South America and the West Indies, with one species found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. They often have aerial roots and freely branching stems, which vary ir shape from cylindrical to winged, or flat and leaf-like, and may be ribbed or angled, some having spines or bristles. Small, funnel-shaped, diurnal flowers are borne singly or in small clusters from the areoles, mainly from spring to summer. These are followed by fleshy, berry-like, usually spherical fruits. In frost-prone areas, grow as houseplants in containers or hanging baskets, or in a temperate or warm greenhouse. In frost-free regions, grow epiphytically on a tree, or in a sheltered, humid border.
hardiness_en: Frost tender.
