Description en: Genus of 2 species of rounded, deciduous shrubs or trees found in scrub, one species occurring from S.E. Europe and S.W. Asia to the Himalayas, the other from Socotra (Yemen). They have mostly opposite, narrowly oblong, entire leaves, and are grown for their showy, funnel-shaped, bright red flowers and large, spherical, edible fruits. In frost-prone areas, grow in a cool green-house or against a sunny wall, either as free-standing shrubs or fan-trained; in warmer areas, use as specimen trees, in a shrub border, or as hedging.
Hardiness en: Frost hardy; they require long, hot summers to produce fruit.
