Description en: Genus of 7 or 8 species of deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs and small trees, with succulent stems and very thick, fleshy branches, from tropical and subtropical America. The simple, entire leaves, clustered towards the stem tips, are alternately or spirally arranged. The fragrant, salverform flowers, each with 5 broad petal lobes, are borne in showy, terminal clusters or panicles, often on bare stems or with the young leaves. Below 10°C (50°F), grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse, or as houseplants. In warmer climates, use as specimen plants. The milky sap may cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
