description_en: Genus of 6 species of erect, bushy, aromatic annuals, with 4-angled stems, found in variable habitats, usually in woodland, from India to Japan. They are cultivated for their opposite, simple, usually ovate, mid- or dark green leaves, often flushed or variegated red or bronze. Whorls of insignificant, 2-lipped, 5-lobed, bell-shaped flowers, each encased in a prominent, 2-lipped calyx, are borne in upright spikes in late summer and autumn P. frutescens and its cultivars are the most commonly grown; their decorative, often purple and frilly foliage contrasts well with the flowers of summer bedding plants.
