description_en: Genus of about 8 species of spiny, deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees occurring in dry and rocky places in woodland and at stream margins from S. Europe to E. Asia. The glossy, mid- to dark green leaves are alternate, ovate to broadly ovate, entire or toothed, often with heart-shaped bases. Star-shaped, 5-petalled, yellowish green flowers are produced in small, axillary cymes. The fruits are large, flat, winged discs. Reputed to have been used for Christ’s "crown of thorns", P. spina-christi is cultivated for its foliage, small flowers, and unusual fruit. Grow in a shrub border or against a wall; can be used for hedging in regions with hot summers.
