description_en: Genus of 3 species of deciduous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen shrubs or small trees from river valleys in China, Japan, Hawaii, and New Zealand. They have alternate, finely pinnate leaves and terminal corymbs of small, cup-shaped, 5-petalled white flowers, followed by spherical to ovoid, red-brown, black, or blue-black fruits, to 8mm (3/8in) across. They are best grown in a sheltered shrub border or against a wall. In very cold areas, grow in a cool greenhouse.
