distribution_en: Mexico to Guatemala

description_en: Genus of 4 species of shrubby or tree-like perennial cacti occurring in semi-arid areas of Mexico and Guatemala. They have short, deep bluish green stems and thick, erect branches with 5-8 ribs and spiny, felted areoles. Open funnel-shaped, short-tubed flowers are borne from the upper lateral areoles in early and midsummer, followed by ovoid, purplish blue fruits. Where temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F), grow in a warm greenhouse. In warmer areas, grow in a rock or desert garden.
