Africa, Angola, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Some species produce annual growth from a subterranean, thickened tuber or caudex; others retain fleshy stems all year. The fleshy or scaly leaves may fall quickly. In summer, unusual, small, petalless, diurnal flowers are borne in cup-like bracts within yellow, green, or brown-orange involucres.
