description_en: Genus of about 225 species of ever-green, mainly dioecious trees and shrubs from forest in North and South America and tropical Africa. The variably shaped, alternate leaves are entire or toothed. Tiny, star-shaped to tubular flowers are produced in axillary cymes, racemes, or panicles, or sometimes singly. Grow as specimen trees or in woodland. In frost-prone areas, grow tender species in a cool or temperate greenhouse. Long, hot summers are needed for production of flowers and fruits.
