description_en: Genus of 16 species of semi-evergreen or evergreen, bulbous perennials occurring in seasonally dry, open areas or river valleys in South Africa. They are cultivated for their attractively marked leaves and their racemes of small, bell-or urn-shaped flowers, reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria); the flowers are produced in spring or summer. In areas where temperatures drop below 7°C (45°F), they are best grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse. In warmer areas, grow in open sites in a rock or desert garden.
